SMTA celebrates motor industry at glittering annual awards night
On October 23rd 2025, we hosted our annual dinner and awards.
Attended by nearly 400 guests and hosted by Scottish comedian and broadcaster Fred MacAuley, the evening was a celebration of the motor trade in Scotland and recognition of excellence.
“It was fantastic evening and wonderful to bring together friends, colleagues and partners from across our industry to celebrate the achievements of businesses and individual excellence,” said SMTA chief executive Alan Gall.
Six awards were handed out starting with the Community Star Award highlighting remarkable contributions to local communities. Three businesses were successful: LM Motor Company, Grant’s MOTs and Jim Reid Vehicle Sales & Services.
The highly anticipated Lifetime Achievement Award went to 94-year-old Morrison Sutherland. Starting his career in the motor trade in 1951 after a period of National Service, Morrison regaled the audience with some stories of his colourful career.
The very best emerging talent in the industry was next to be recognised with Gillian Manson picking up the Apprentice of the Year award – Gillain spent the first 31 years of their career in social care, before deciding to make a career change – running a garage with their partner.
The final award of the evening was the Rising Star Award. This went to Jessica Graham Bowden who was recognised by her peers as an outstanding newcomer with five years or less in the automotive sector.
As well as celebrating people and businesses in the industry, raising money for charity was also an important part of the evening. The guests heard from three charities: Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance, Megan’s Space, and SNAC (Scottish Network for Arthritis in Children), before participating in an auction and raffle, which raised vital funds for the charities.
“I offer my congratulations to all the award winners on the night. The event has once again showcased the best within our industry and exemplified the contributions made in our ever- evolving sector,” added Mr Gall.
