The SMTA is a Trade Association established in 1903 to “encourage, promote and protect” members of the Motor Trade in Scotland.

The SMTA represents all types of businesses involved in all aspects of the industry, including the sale of vehicles and accessories, servicing and repair – both mechanical and bodywork – MOT stations and all ancillary and allied trades.

The SMTA is MEMBER LED, MEMBER DRIVEN and MEMBER FOCUSSED in all of its activities and objectives.

The SMTA is THE VOICE OF THE MOTOR INDUSTRY IN SCOTLAND.

The SMTA is not just for the “big boys” or the franchise dealers; it is for everyone, big or small, whether you are a one-man firm with a turnover that is below the VAT threshold or a multi-outlet dealer with a turnover of millions, YOUR Association is here to help YOU.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We act as a facilitator for ascertaining the views of the motor trade on a variety of matters directly or indirectly affecting the trade. We regularly meet with many governmental departments including the Scottish Office, the VI, the DVLA, the Office of Fair Trading and the DTI, Trading Standards, to name but a few.

We lobby Parliament – Westminster and Holyrood – to ensure that the views of our members are made known. However, before taking a stance, we consult with our members to see how they would like to have a matter dealt with.

We own and run the biennial SCOTTISH MOTOR SHOW held at the SECC in Glasgow.

WE PROVIDE ASSISTANCE

We can provide valuable assistance for our members in a wide range of areas including employment law, redundancy, unfair dismissals, terms & conditions of employment, maternity pay, health & safety matters, VAT, PAYE, MOT appeals and other areas where members require assistance. We also give general advice on consumer issues – the Association has its own Conciliation and Arbitration Service – and all this assistance is at no extra cost.

WE PROVIDE SERVICES

We are constantly upgrading and improving our range of cost effective member services. Principal services currently include our Technical Support Service, our Customer Service Standards (CSS) and MOT Health check assessments, our Health & Safety checks, our audiometric and lung testing service, our Apprentice Training Division, our special rate motor trade insurance service, our reduced rate utility services (gas, electricity etc). There are many more and they are constantly being improved and increased in number.

SCOTSURE

The SMTA also owns its own Mechanical Breakdown Insurance company. SCOTSURE INSURANCE COMPANY LTD provides a wide range of MBI and GAP policies to the trade. It is now one of the leading warranty providers in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
